COMMUNITY Tariffs: Supreme Court strikes down Trump’s sweeping tariffs

Trump took a broken process - made it worse...then got it back to the original broken process and said ...it’s better now ...and the game continues

I don't eve know that the process was broken. I'm sure there are things we can do to improve trade for our country.

However, Trump's understanding of what a trade deficit is just happens to be wrong. All the moves he's made have been a consequence of him not knowing how trade works.

Can somebody break this down into BET News terms?

Naw it’s broken - the funny thing is Obama wanted to fix this and the republicans didn’t let him

The problem is the complete imbalance with the other super powers… we shouldn’t have tarrifs on poor countries and they should on us because we allow them to have those tarrifs so we can TELL them what to do… in other words we give them free money if they obey us…

But China is like fuck yall and then putting tarrifs on our products while again saying fuck America-

Now you can say - tarrifs on American cars in China make no sense cause they not buying f150s and dodge chargers - but tarrifs on grain and oil makes no sense. They making it more expensive to buy from us than it is to buy from OPEC and Ukraine and Russia - that’s broken

The tarrif system is set up the same way USAID was… we used our money to make people do our bidding - but if you gonna take from us and not do our bidding then we need to stop being suckers -

This ain’t a Trump thing - it’s an economic power thing.

You can tarrif us if you don’t threaten Tawian cause that’s messing with our economy- but you can’t do both- mess with our money and then not have free trade…

But again Trump ain’t did shit but get back to baseline -

Obviously he is playing the market - sells all his stocks high and buy back in when he increases tarrifs and the market is depressed -

China is really the only other superpower, and yes, we have a trade imbalance with them but that's because they give us a bunch of cheap shit. In other words, we are getting what we want from them. That doesn't mean the system is broken. Trade imbalances are not inherently bad. You have a trade imbalance with your grocery store. Do you think the grocery store is taking advantage of you?

Not the same thing...the store is getting what it wants and I’m getting what I want. If the president...now that’s 3 presidents in a row Obama trump Biden and then trump all saying we got a problem with the trade imbalance with China, then I’m apt to take their word at it...what trump is doing about it seems wrong...but it doesn’t mean I don’t see the issue

Then how is it not the same thing. We want the cheap products that China sells and Chinese companies want our money. We're getting what we want and they are getting what they want. The trade imbalance isn't the problem. American politicians just don't want China gaining power because they are perceived as the enemy. I, personally, don't care if China becomes a superpower, and I'm betting you don't either.

It would be one thing if we hand industries that China was biting into, but we really don't. We don't make cheap electrics or cheap clothes, or cheap anything really. I'm sure there are a few industries where we might be in competition, then targeted tariffs in those cases are fine. But I don't buy this idea that the imbalances are bad in themselves. At least, not until we actually build up some industries that would compete with them like Biden was trying to do with the Chips Act.

Plus China looks stronger because they didn’t cave. Trump came groveling to get a trade war cease fire. We’re basically back to square one. A good negotiator wouldn’t set fire to their own house to intimidate their adversary then put the fire out and claim victory. China didn’t suffer at all through this.

Plus the Chinese countered Trump’s victory argument with their official statement downplaying that it was a deal. Basically it’s an agreement on how to proceed, nothing agreed to on an actual trade deal.
