It was general overall for Star Wars. One example is the books had a bigger family with the Skywalker family. For this show specifically there's a bunch of characters not in the books

Disney dropped the extended book/comic lore. They're legends not canon...

Before Disney started doing their stories everything in the books was canon. Now they're considered Legends material meaning they're not part of the main star wars story anymore.

Disney is starting to take characters from Legends and make them canon without making the whole story canon. In Asoka the Abeloth character was considered Legends until recently since Disney about to use her.

Makes sense. When I talk to someone I know who has read the books he gets annoyed at what they've done but just treats it all as something new apart from the books. So it can get confusing talking to him about it lol

Like Chi said, some of the stuff from Legends has turned into canon. We're kinda in uncharted territory with this show cause we've never seen this time period in live action
