Not surprised about that. In a lot of places, they would tell people, especially kids to "don't walk by Mr. John's house because he's strange". Strange could mean a lot of things, the older folks know what he has done. Instead of doing something about it, they will just tell the kids to stay away.

And also I have seen them be wrong about people too. They will run with the story that he or she has done something. When they find out that the whole story was a lie, they would come back and say "Oh. But they look like they did it".
