These deals confused me. If he renewed with us, he was not getting the 35 mil signing bonus, right?

Happy for the dude, from riding the bench under Lampard less than 2 years ago to this, big W. More players should try to get to free agency. Its a big gamble, but the rewards can be massive.

I read Chelsea offered him more money (highest paid defenders in the club's history) but the bonuses, plus signing on fee etc from Madrid Chelsea didn't want to match. ***Edit***



It's a ridiculous amount of money but like you said he took a gamble and it worked out exactly how he wanted.
