I figured the defense case would work but I was expecting him to get in trouble with the whole bringing someone's gun across state lines to get him some years in prison. Turned out he just barely squeaked out of that law too

He didn't bring it across state lines, but did have that possession charge. But you're right...poorly written law got him off the hook.
