Prison abolishment now! (Thread)

What did he do?
If I remember correctly I’m he was convicted of shooting and killing a plain clothes police officer

he was sentenced to death but CACs felt as though the environment influenced the proceedings. they resentenced him to life without parole

in 2012 some case in AL ....banned mandatory life sentencing for teenagers

the man petitioned that this should be retroactively applied to his situation and voila

i always talk about my stance on prisons/jails

imo traditional prisons provoke more violence than they prevent and are so fundamentally flawed, they CANNOT be reformed.

in fact they should be abolished and replaced by "anti-prisons," that is, locked, secure residential spaces, therapeutic communities, and centers for human development—emphasizing therapy and education rather than punishment, and restorative rather than retributive justice.

prisons as they stand currently only exacerbate the problems in society.

Angela Davis said it best:

“Prisons do not disappear social problems, they disappear human beings. Homelessness, unemployment, drug addiction, mental illness, and illiteracy are only a few of the problems that disappear from public view when the human beings contending with them are relegated to cages.”

That shit won't happen in the U.S. anytime soon. While, I think there are some prisoners that wouldn't benefit from and don't necessarily deserve that kind of treatment, I can admit what you're suggesting is probably a better way to go for most criminals than what we have now.

The problem is that a lot of Americans are too committed to wanting to punish criminals and se those people suffer to ever be good with something like that. You can bet that some people would look at a detention center like what you propose and claim that the criminals are being treated better than a lot of innocent citizens. Hell, some crazy people make that claim for the shitty prisons we have now.

So, life in prison, with no HOPE of parole.

This what they cheered for? He's still gonna die in jail; it's just now he gets to die on (somewhat) his own terms.
