Will Smith will open up about his regrets as a father in his upcoming memoir Will which is set for a November 9 release.

In an excerpt shared with People on Friday, the 53-year-old actor recalled how devastated his son Jaden, now 23, was after the critical and commercial failure of their 2013 film After Earth.

'After Earth was an abysmal box office and critical failure," the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actor wrote. 'And what was worse was that Jaden took the hit.'

'Fans and the press were absolutely vicious; they said and printed things about Jaden that I refuse to repeat. Jaden had faithfully done everything that I'd instructed him to do, and I had coached him into the worst public mauling he'd ever experienced.'

The Pursuit of Happiness actor was heartbroken when Jaden, who was 15-year-old at the time of After Earth's release, told him he wanted to be emancipated.

'We never discussed it, but I know he felt betrayed. He felt misled, and he lost his trust in my leadership," Smith said. 'At fifteen years old, when Jaden asked about being an emancipated minor, my heart shattered. He ultimately decided against it, but it sucks to feel like you've hurt your kids.

I’m sorry but I don’t really care about these 0.1% problems. So your son got a shot that most aspiring actors dream of because you’re his father. Then that shot got panned by critics. Kids out here dealing with real life trauma and he’s hurt by words.

I’m not discounting how much it might have hurt him, I just don’t think it’s something Will needs to talk about publicly. Sorry but I hate woe is me stories from very privileged people.

Its his autobiography though. What else he supposed to talk about?!

I don’t care what it is. Boo hoo you feel like you’re a bad father because you gave your son a shot in Hollywood and it didn’t work out.

But hey, it’s just my opinion. You’re free to disagree.
It may be from a different class, but the struggle is still relatable. My father (RIP) really pressed his kids to be successful, and made plenty of mistakes along the way. Some of us may have disagreed at the time with how he pushed us, but we all have varying degrees of success thanks to his guidance. As a child of a man that wanted his whole family to be successful, I can relate to Jaden feeling "betrayed" for following his father's orders and being deemed a failure to the public for it... and as an uncle to 20+ nephews and nieces, I can relate to Will regretting pushing his son to that failure.

I remember joining in on talking about how much I hated After Earth. It was one of the most painful viewing experiences I ever had alongside The Last Airbender and Dragon Ball.

But looking back, I wouldn't discount that there was a racist element to the backlash. If you asked me the last time white nepotism was deemed oh so wrong, I couldn't tell you. But between Will and Jaden, Doc and Austin Rivers, and Levar Ball and his sons, the media and "people" seem to be consistently unilaterally vicious whenever they see a black father guiding his black son.

Bush and Trump both literally became president after having a head start due to their white fathers' success. But when we do it "entitled, nepotism, failure waiting to happen, overbearing, undeserving, etc"

After Earth wasn’t really as bad as people make it man. It’s like whenever I think about Floyd and Manny, I remember how much flack he caught for building himself up after he left Top Rank, he had better quality wins vs Manny. Yet the machine built Floyd up as bad and pac as a better and more thorough fighter.

After Earth isn’t really more or less than the average level science fiction film, but the hell it received is always gonna make me laugh.

I never met or heard anybody say this about the movie. It was below average for me but I watched it a few times to make sure and even watched bout 2 months ago.
