You can just show them a picture of how you want them to look.
@MzKB has small-medium locs, mine are small. Think Lil John for medium. Lauren Hill would be large.

I choose medium size for retwist purposes. The smaller the lock the longer the retwist time.

I didn't hate how mine looked when I first started only because my hair was natural and I already had length. My awkwardness came with the different textures I have. Some of my hair locked before others and that made for a messy look sometime. I used thin elastic headbands to keep it all under control.
