UT cops shoot a white kid with autism. Maybe now there will be reform?

The one between three and three.

A 13-year-old boy with autism is recovering after being shot by police in Glendale, Utah on Friday night, CBS affiliate KUTV reports. The boy, Linden Cameron, is still in the hospital after suffering injuries to his shoulder, both ankles, intestine, and bladder, his mother told KUTV in an interview Sunday.

Golda Barton said she called police and asked for a crisis intervention team because her son was having a mental breakdown.

The mother said she told officers that her son, who has Asperger's, needed to be transported to the hospital for treatment. "This is how to deal with people with mental health issues. So, you call them, and they're supposed to come out and be able to deescalate a situation using the most minimal force possible," Barton told KUTV.

"I said, 'He's unarmed, he doesn't have anything, he just gets mad and he starts yelling and screaming. He's a kid, he's trying to get attention, he doesn't know how to regulate,'" Barton said.

Less than five minutes after the officers arrived, Barton, who waited outside, heard "get down on the ground" and several gunshots were heard, she told KUTV. Barton said she thought her son was dead. The officers didn't immediately say if he was dead or not, she said.

Her son was then handcuffed, Barton told KUTV.

Actually... It would prove a point if police reform came about behind this white kid getting shot. It would prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Black lives don't matter one fuckin bit.

This is more common that people think.

My girl's 2nd youngest daughter is autistic. Non-verbal. I knew before reading this story yesterday that this was a white parent. All black parents - doubly so for black parents of kids on the spectrum - know that calling the cops on a 13 year old, who is likely bigger than other 13 year olds, being aggressive maybe cannot communucate verbally, and can't understand orders, is a recipe for disaster.

I've worked retail security. the amount of times I had to deal with people who weren't in their right mind was way more than I can count. I was unarmed, responsible for stopping thieves and recovering merchandise. Not once did I get into a physical altercation and yet I was trained way less than the police.

They could set up a non-lethal task force to handle situations like this and reduce the chance of something like this happening. They don't need a gun for every situation. One guy focuses on assessing a situation and they can have a second guy in case things get physical.

For police to have shot him (a white boy), he musta really been showin’ out!

Trust me, they don’t do this kinda shit to white kids unless it’s the absolute last resort.

Soooo...is the mama gonna march along wit the rest of the protesters for police reform or no?

If nothing else, people really do need to learn that it's not a good idea to call the police on their family members if it's some kind of mental issue at play.

There really needs to be another number you can dial for shit like this. In NYC we got 311 for noise complaints... we need something like 711 or something that means don't send scary ass armed police. It's not that complicated.

White ppl are OK with sacrificing their own if it means shutting black ppl up. White ppl are used for target practice too but they dont care. Nothing will come from this.

Yeah, a lot of those assholes will say some shit like "where is BLM for this person" instead of "why did the cops murder that person?"

They say MoRe WhItE pPl ArE kIlLeD bY cOpS with their full chest too stupid to realize the murder and lack of accountability is the issue and not our skin color. They care more about race and upholding it than anybody on the fuckin planet.

They have other numbers for it, but it's not presented as an option unless you know to look for it. That's part of the issue right there. The public relies on cops to handle every issue. Then in turn, cops internalize that like they're supposed to do everything and any attempt to rein them in is taken as disrespect.

You have to blame the system. You can't blame the people that are involved in these incidents. Mental illness is complicated and varies wildly. You can say you shouldn't call the cops when a mental issue is at play, but it's hard to say that to a little old lady dealing with her grown son who is in the middle of an episode, has a weapon, and is threatening to kill her and himself.

Like Gabi said, the other options need to be better funded and put out there front and center so everyone knows about them.

This is why we need reform. I'm sure most people would assume to call the cops as well..
