What you think about the Spurs small ball on Friday? I liked the pace yall were playing at and how yall looked offensively....White was great, saw some very encouraging signs from Lonnie Walker and Keldon Johnson, Murray was ok
Jakob Poeltl was the only center yall used and had Rudy Gay basically playing the backup 5
Derozan actually kind of took a backseat and let the young guys cook and then took over late
They used that style throughout the scrimmages also. White was super aggressive during those games too, which is always a good thing for the offense dating back to last season. Pop should have started the season with the lineups we had to make that playoffs run last season instead of automatically giving Murray the starting point guard spot over White at the beginning of this season.
I think against bigger teams (like Memphis today) we are gonna struggle but I love the fact that he is actually playing the young guys finally. It's kinda telling Luka Samanic isn't getting much run though. He just turned 20 this year so he still has some time to get better even though he looked good towards the end of the development league season he is still raw and not ready for real NBA minutes.
I really like how fearless Keldon Johnson plays on both sides of the ball. He reminds me of Westbrook in how he plays hard no matter what. He also has a knack for finishing and inviting contact on his drives to the rim. The guy gives maximum effort with everything, even cheering for teammates on the bench. LMAO.
I love the way Walker was playing before the break in games and it seems he is getting even more comfortable playing now. He is showing solid play making skills and not backing away from contact at the rim (early he was trying to finesse finish at the hoop too much) and taking open shots. He is getting better with off ball defense and isn't bad as a man defender. I really like Walker's game alot and think he could be really special.
Poetl is finally getting more run and I fear that's going to help him get paid by a team that isn't my Spurs. Lol. He is a really good rim defender and solid on the pick and roll. Not the greatest pick and roll big but far from a liability which Is good. He finishes well at the hoop and is also a solid passer. The guy knows how to play the game and his only real weakness is he isn't a shooter. I really hope we can keep him but of course for a good price.
Murray has obviously worked hard on his shooting and it is really noticeable because he isn't afraid to let it fly and he has a pretty decent looking shot now. The issue I have with him is he has trouble knowing when to shoot, when to probe the defense, and when to pass. Honestly he isn't really a good point guard. He is a solid player overall but he has to get better with decision making on both sides of the ball. His defense (as I've said before on here) is a bit overrated but when he isn't gambling alot and actually locked in..... man he is good. The issue is he likes to gamble too much and if his opponent is crafty or super fast he will get roasted alot. His gambling works if the help defense is solid but this season our help defense hasn't been solid. Lmao.
Demar honestly has played the same way all season. He doesn't force too much on offense unless the team is struggling or when we are in clutch situations. He has actually been really efficient this season but the thing that has pissed me off about him is how he visibly gets emotional during games. He is one of the most tech getting players this season and sometimes if he isnt getting calls or his shot isn't falling he will visibly sulk on the court. Maybe I'm spoiled due to being used to guys like David, Tim, Tony, and Manu always playing hard not matter what but that is disheartening to see your best player visibly give up or pout when things aren't going their way. It's one thing to argue a call and keep it moving it's a totally different thing to let it mess with you for stretches of the game. I like Demar though and think on a team with alot of 3&D guys he would kill. He is a really good passer and has a great way of getting to the hoop and finishing through contact. This team just isn't built to maximize his strong points.
Sorry for the long response but I'm happy the NBA is back. Lol
