Is it a portable window unit or a central A/C unit?
If it's Central Air, you probably just need more freon or a new compressor.

when was the last time you had it serviced?
You might just need some freon. If its a big leak, it can still be repaired but ALL of these options are way cheaper than a brand new unit.
