Exhibit A raised eyebrows and got the name Jay Electronica out there. Exhibit C is the track that had everybody thinking he was the Rakim/Nas for that era.
"C" was the one that got him buzzing not A.
And again , we're talking about hip hop heads. Outside of hip hop heads, nobody knew who df Jay E was, stop with this rewriting history bullshit. It's made this tournament shit wack af.

I can understand Exhibit A, but Empire State Of Mind was arguably the biggest song of the year.
Yea I ain't mad at ESOM winning, but i think it was more white people liking it than it being a song niggas was blasting all year. But it was a huge song.

A had cat like "yo, dude nice with it". C had cats like "Dude is the future of hip hop"
If we went 100% with history, then Chamillionaire "Ridin'" woulda won 06, Soulja Boi "Crank Dat" woulda been the winner for 2007, Lolipop for 08.
But that ain't what this tournament is about, if it was then why have a tournament in the first place? You could just pull the Billboard stats and just debate why "Ridin'" should or shouldn't be the #1 song for 06 or whatever.
We get the chance to nominate joints we believed were more worthy of that spot in any given year. That means shit that got overlooked by the masses gets a better chance.

What's corny is expecting us to conform to what was written instead of what we actually liked during those years.
The masses almost never appreciate music for the craft. They listen to shit that's easily digestible to their ears. In the case of hip hop, after the early '00s it was rare for a skilled MC to get any shine. Even towards the late 90's that was happening; simpler rhymes, glossy dance-able production, and a catchy chorus (aka the "hook") is all it took and you went #1. So the shit that was "big", especially after the early 00's, was rarely ever what was "good" by any stretch of the imagination.
Expecting us, with our vastly expanded listening palettes, to regurgitate the same ass songs that was in heavy rotation in any given year instead of introducing shit that's actually good into the mix is corny as shit.
