Who Ran Hip Hop In 1993

Wu-Tang and Snoop albums didn’t drop until November. Dr. Dre’s ‘The Chronic’ held down the beginning of the year and kept dropping new hits throughout the year, but.....

May be a surprise to some of you, but Scarface and Geto Boys held down the summer and most of that year with these two bangers.....

I wish this was the truth, but it wasn't. "Protect Ya Neck/Method Man" didn't drop until August of '93 and 36 Chambers didn't drop until November. '93 was pretty much dominated by Dr Dre until close to the end of the year. The only acts I can think of that really gave Dre a run that year was Boss, Onyx, and Cypress Hill.

Souls of Mischief had a strong presence that year. Masta Ace made plenty of noise with "Jeep Ass Niguh" then dropped "Slaughtahouse", Ice Cube hit us with "It Was A Good Day" and a vastly improved remixed version of "Check Yo Self" (the original sampled Salt and Pepa's "Shoop" and pretty much sounded like ass). MC Breed came out with "The New Breed" and killed it. King Tee's "Tha Triflin Album" came out early in the year and put us up on Tha Alkaholiks, who themselves put out "21 and Over" later in the year.

There was a whole lot of good music that came out of '93. Waaaaay too much to list.

Yeah...I know...I just felt like being east coast bias this morning...I was actually listening to 93’ til Infinity a lot that year but tha Wu hit during my Bornday month (Nov) and that’s all I listened to for tha next year(s) lol

Yeah The Chronic came out in Dec 92 and rocked all the way into 1993. Everybody was waiting for Snoop's album. The suspense was like 50 Cent and Get Rich Or Die Trying if you remember what that was like.

I'll even concede that The West Coast was running the table in 93.

Either way yall chop it, Dre and snoop.

Dre had the first half of the year and snoop had the 2nd. Snoop was on most of Chronic too.

Wow. You responded after my post and not a mention of Scarface and the Geto Boys albums?

Dr. Dre is the only answer that can be given, other than what I laid out with Face/Geto Boys. I have no idea where some of you were hanging out, but in the Sunmer of ‘93 every hood in America was bumping The Chronic and this......

I went with what I could remember off the top of my head. Shit, I left off a lot of East coast shit I rocked with, and in particular Black Moon's "Who Got The Props". I remembered it right after I hit "Post Reply" and just didn't feel like editing it. I still have the original cassette single for it in the all yellow sleeve and the Nervous Records logo on it and nothing else. We ran that shit into the dirt. I rode to work with that song blasting out of the raggedy Mustang damned near every day. Then "How Many MC's" came out and then the album. Black Moon was hard to fuck with back then.

But if we must do that:

ATCQ dropped the classic Midnight Marauders that year, 2Pac had "Strictly for my N.I.G.G.A.Z", Diggable Planets had the radio on lock with "Rebirth of Slick" and it got so much play I got sick of it. Run DMC staged a successful comeback with "Down With The King", Fat Joe brought the DITC sound to the forefront with "Represent", KRS ONE killed it with "Return of the Boom Bap" and proved he didn't really need the BDP name anymore, MC Ren hit us with the platinum selling "Shock of the Hour". Leaders of the New School's single "What's Next" put them back on the map and the album stayed in rotation for a minute, Lords of The Underground had three singles that year as well as the album "Here Come The Lords".

And I still haven't touched on cats like Mac Dre, Dre Dog, E-40, Too $hort, Kam, Funkdoobiest, Eazy E, Shaq, 8Ball & MJG, Kriss Kross, De La Soul, and Spice 1.

93 had one of the best string of hip hop releases of all time. It's hard to remember all of it.

I didn't even realize Wu and Snoop dropped that close together. I remembered Snoop being like the only getting consistent play for a bit and Wu coming and stealing the spot light.
