Kool G Rap has skills, he's a beast on the mic. But when he was in his prime he wasn't the K.O.N.Y. I don't ever remember an era where he was considered top 3-5, he was just outside top 5 in his prime.
He doesn't have a classic album and his impact on pop culture wasn't that strong.
When it's all said and done he's kinda like Black Thought, skills but no hits.
I voted 26-50
Outside of Fast Life, and Ill Street Riches, there's not much to go off on dude. He never had a ALBUM of dopeness, just some songs here and there.
What are you on about, no classics??? And no impact??? Him and Polo have arguably 3 classics, though my favourite is prolly 'Live & Let Die'... Then the his solo album albums '4,5,6' or 'The Giancana Story' are classics imo... Not to mention he birthed a style and almost a genre of hip hop...
Seriously??? Have you taken the time to sit down and listen to his albums??? Even if youre not a fan of old skool hip hop, go listen to 'The Giancana Story' or collaboration albums with 38 Spesh...
You can play 'The Giancana Story' album through without skipping a track...
First of all, I remember when Kool G Rap first dropped. My older brother went on a field trip to NYC between Christmas 1986 and New Years. He came home with three records:
Saturday Night/Do It Do It - Schooly D
Jane Stop This Crazy Thing/ Cocaine - MC Shan
It's A Demo/ I'm Fly Kool G Rap & DJ Polo.
The college stations in Boston didn't start playing these songs until several months later. All that is to say New York gets music before Boston.
Anyway, I remember Kool G Rap's earliest records like Juice Crew All Stars, Evolution, Poison, Rhyme Time, Rikers Island, and Road To The Riches. And of course The Symphony.
I copped G Rap's first two albums. He could rap but there was something missing, that X factor.
Maybe he needs a better producer, not a beatmaker, but somebody that cam bring out the best in him. The way Puffy brought out the best in Biggie.
Youre brothers field trip and you remembering when he first dropped is irrelevant to what you said, you said G Rap doesnt have any classic albums and has had no impact on pop culture, the fact he arguably bought in a new flow and genre of hip hop and is a genuine originator proves he has had a massive impact on pop culture, he is a cult hero...No one was flowing like G Rap and no one was spitting mafiaso type rhymes... Big Pun, Rae, Nas, Jay, Vinnie Paz, Necro and so on all have inspiration from him, not many people in hip hop can say they bought something original to hip hop...
Like @figo said, most likely youre favourite rappers, favourite rapper... Dude gets love from the mainstream and underground, and he works with both too... Dude has work with Nas to Necro...

If it was all about skills and nothing else, Kool G Rap would probably be top 10 DOA, maybe even top 5. But there's more to being the best than just lyrics. G Rap is missing something but I can't put my finger on what it is. Maybe he needs the right A&R to pick the singles from his albums, or the right video to appeal to the masses. I can't put my finger on what it is, but he's missing something. For example, I really liked Kanye's Through The Wire, All Falls Down & Jesus Walks from College Dropout. Those songs made the album a classic. Kool G Rap is way better than Kanye on the mc, but he doesn't have anything like All Falls Down.
Having said that, these are some of my favorite Kool G Rap tracks that came out when he was on Rawkus circa 2000.
Truthfully I've never heard the album that these songs are from,, maybe the A&R that was in charge of this album dropped the ball because I don't remember it being promoted when it was out. I don't remember the videos or the songs being played on the radio.
If you havnt heard 'The Giancana Story' thats not down to anyone but yourself slacking bro, that album is a classic and the tunes you picked are from that... Like you say there is more than being a lyricist, he is a pioneer, he is an originator, he is respected by and 9 times outta 10 also picked by his peers as the GOAT or in their top 5 or 10... He is even found Joell Ortiz if that means anything, he was on 'Giancana Story'...
Well is the Giancana story is as good as you say, his record label/A&R dropped the ball because I don't really remember hearing about it.
And that album rarely comes up when discussing GOAT albums.
