What's The Big Deal About Sonny Liston?

5 Grand

Old School Godfather
Everybody says that Sonny Liston was a monster and nobody thought Clay/Ali could beat him.

But he only defended his title once in a rematch against Floyd Patterson, after he beat Patterson the first time.

Liston's record was 35-2 when he fought Clay/Ali so it's not like he couldn't be beaten.

To this day people say Clay/Ali beating Liston was a miracle and one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.

Liston had one title defense and two losses when he stepped in the ring with Clay/Ali

So what's the big deal about Sonny Liston?

I believe Liston was an 8 to 1 favorite in that fight with Cassius Clay. I also think people just wanted Clay to shut up and be “humbled” so they put into their mind that this “monster” is gonna shut this young loud mouth up. It was a huge deal mainly because of the odds and how people wanted Clay to be silenced. Still a big upset

The "golden days" are greatly romanticized

not to mention ppl belived Clay was around 40 years old when he found Ali. so you gotta factor in that.

but imo ppl at the time jus assumed Ali was all bark no bite. and since Sonny was a established boxer ppl jus assumed he would beat the tf outta Ali.
