Like i said before, i think people are just kinda moving away from the message board format of things. Yes they're are exceptions but as a whole i think its done. New generation has way more streamlined options for expression and content. This why AHH tried to revamp but failed horribly.

Reddit and 4chan are fucking massive and they're essentially forums. Forums can still do well in this climate. Some are hot and some aren't, it's that simple.

What ABW doesn't have going for it is that it's fairly niche, relative to the mass use and appeal of something like Reddit. These platforms are also big and pervasive enough to monopolize some general interest and niche content from other competitors.
