US economist proposes $12 trillion in slavery reparations to eliminate black-white wealth gap

A renowned economist has said that $12 trillion should be afforded to black Americans in reparation for slavery to help the close wealth gap.

Duke University professor, William Darity Jr, and writer, Kirsten Mullen, jointly published a report for The Roosevelt Institute, an American liberal think tank, laying out a case for slavery reparations.

Prof Darity and Ms Mullen outline that to eliminate the existing Black-White wealth gap an allocation of between $10 trillion and $12 trillion, or about $800,000 per black household, should be paid.

The report says that the “US government—the culpable party—must pay the debt”.

“Ultimately, respect for black Americans as people and as citizens—and acknowledgement, redress, and closure for the history and financial hardship they have endured—requires monetary compensation,” the report reads.

The proposal comes as the demand for consideration of the case for reparations resurfaces across the county amidst ongoing national civil unrest following the death of George Floyd.

Over 140 members of congress have to date co-signed the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act, which was introduced into the house in March.

Only two members signed the bill when it was proposed in 2014, the broadcaster reported.

Prof Darity told CNBC: “the present moment seems to afford more of an opportunity to move forward than any moment I’ve experienced in my lifetime.”

The report details that eligibility for payments should be restricted to living descendants of people who were enslaved in the US prior to the Civil War, who have “self-identified” as black on an official document.

“In short, the reparations plan we put forward designates black American descendants of US slavery as the target community,” it reads.

A large majority of Americans still oppose the use of one-time payments to address the persistent wealth gap between black and white citizens.

Only one in five respondents agreed the United States should use “taxpayer money to pay damages to descendants of enslaved people”, according to Reuters and Ipsos polls in June.

However, Prof Darity and Ms Mullen maintain that “eliminating the black-white (pre-tax) wealth differential should be a core objective of the redress component of a plan for reparations.”

Prof Darity has studied the rationale and design of reparations for more than 30 years. Ms Mullen is a lecturer whose work focuses on race, art, history.

Their new report is adapted from their new book From Here to Equality

I remember having a discussion with a coworker about reparations. I brought it up when he claim the Astros need to give back the title, trophy, money and all from the world series, after they was exposed for cheating. I agreed with him that would be the correct thing to do. But then I asked him if he felt the same way about more complex issues like reparations since we talking about things a group of people benefit from that wasn't truly earned. (i wanted to prove a point to him since we discuss race relations from time to time and i saw that as an opportunity to bring it up) He went out of his way to argue against reparations, but without having one intelligent/valid argument as to why it isn't owed to every black American in U.S. I told him we talking about stolen labor, human rights violations of all kinds, economic opportunities + resources denied, violence, murder, all that the U.S. government subjected to a generational group of people for almost 400 years - all things the same U.S. gov now will readily agree is wicked and EVIL, but still haven't done anything to be truly forgiven of it, much less done anything monumental to correct it...meanwhile entities, institutions, families currently exist with wealth, control, luxuries that came as a result of that huge crime. And I'm not saying I'd turn down money, but I don't even necessarily want that myself...but at the very least it should be stripped from people and institutions that did get money off of that...that and black people shouldn't have property taxes, should have free college and have an automatic big time housing voucher or something.

I think from my experience.....That white people that benefitted the most are against this because it would give black people access to them. You must understand what access means. Country club fees, gated communities, and other things are in place for a reason. If access is given to anyone and everyone, it dilutes the value of the information.

And, I get it...at least from the business stand point. But if you have to steal, kill, and all that just to remain in business then you on borrowed time my friend and should straighten up immediately. And more and more ppl starting to see now there’s some kind of collapse happening. The U.S leadership is not standing for what’s correct anymore and you can only reap what you sow.

This isnt about should AA get reparations. We all agree reparations should be paid.

The biggest issue with this is that the size of the US economy is $21 trillion. So if 14 trillion is paid out for reperations, there wouldnt be such a thing as a US economy left, and inflation would make it so that the 14 trillion will be equivalant to way less.

I say that to say this isnt realistic and it wont even help much because the whole point should be to find a way for AAs to close the wealth gap in America, but if 14 trillion is paid out, America will drop from the largest economy to like in the 50s and take the world economy down with it. AAs end up becoming economically equal in a version of America no one wants to live in.

I dont have the answers on how reparations should be paid, but what this article is doing is putting energy behind the impossible.

At least half of the money need come from the gov of whatever country it was that sold off the slaves that was sent here on that ship to begin with too. U.S. gov isn’t the only guilty party. So the U.S. economy don’t necessarily half to crumble. The economy is based on credit anyway they’ll be aight.
