Scientifically speaking humans have a weird attraction to symmetry. 'Ugly' people have less symmetrical faces making them less appealing to the vast majority of humans.

A study showed 'ugly' babies and children are more likely to be neglected and abused than their symmetrical faced counterparts. Heart breaking if you really stop to think about. Kids cant even catch a break from their parents.
