Around 2 PM on March 31st, a 17-year-old boy was wrongfully arrested by the Toronto and Peel Police officers by using excessive force.

The teen was later sent to the ER for injuries and has been released by the authorities.

The Incident

The 17-year-old boy left the house to get food from McDonald’s. While in the car, undercover police surrounded the vehicle and boxed in the car.

Dave Bosveld, the godfather of the teen told 6ixbuzz that the police rammed in the car, used a hammer to smash the window, and fired flash bombs into the vehicle.

The police reportedly dragged the young man out of the car, threw him facedown on the ground and handcuffed him.

“He was compliant the whole time and even told the cops his name,” Bosveld said.

Peel Police in a statement, told 6ixbuzz that they were looking for Kwami Garwood, who was wanted in a Brampton kidnapping and an unrelated murder from last June 2020.

When the police realized that the teen was wrongfully arrested, he was taken to the ER due to injuries he incurred from the takedown. He was transported with a Peel police officer in the ambulance, with handcuffs on.

“This is a dynamic takedown. This person is in no way similar in appearance to the suspect, the only thing they have in common would be black skin,” Bosveld told 6ixbuzz.

The teen suffered injuries on his left leg, facial bruising, and lacerations from the takedown. The teen further reports being beaten by the police.

While in the ER
While in the ER, Bosveld says, the police failed to contact the teen’s mother. The mother was notified by the hospital.

When the mother arrived at the hospital, the authorities minimized the situation and withheld information of the takedown. Instead, Bosveld says, the Peel Region officer tried to ask the mother for information of the suspect. The officer showed photos of the suspect and further inquired of any connection or sighting of the suspect.

“It’s an odd way of criminalizing the boy,” says Bosveld.

The boy was later released to the mother and was charged with a breach of court-ordered condition for being behind the wheel of the vehicle. The teen was previously prohibited from driving a car as he was caught driving without a license.

The Aftermath
The teen is traumatized and has not fully comprehended the situation.

“He’s a kid and police profiled a little boy while on the hunt for a dangerous suspect,” Boseveld told 6ixbuzz.

“They made a mistake, they should have apologized, they should have acknowledged it and attempted to support the family. They probably should not have issued a statement that minimizes the boy’s injuries and criminalizes him by announcing that he was charged with this breach recognizance,” Boseveld added.

Boseveld says that it has been hard for the family and they have had sleepless night. “They’re scared but they’re very strong and believe there should be justice so this does not happen to another family.”

The family is asking for accountability on this matter.

Statement from The Peel Regional Police
Upon inquiry from the Peel Region Police, the statement said,

“On March 31, 2021, Peel Police investigators received information about a wanted suspect Kwami Garwood (wanted in the Brampton kidnapping and wanted by TPS for an unrelated murder from last June 2020); he was seen operating a vehicle in the Toronto area.

In light of the serious nature of Kwami Garwood’s offences and information that he was in possession of a firearm, Peel requested assistance from Toronto (ETF)

Due to the serious nature of the offences and the concern for public safety, a plan was required to affect an arrest quickly and safely.

It was a dynamic situation and the male in the vehicle was safely arrested. He was taken to hospital as a precaution, medically cleared and released

The male was later released by investigators, facing additional charge for a breaching a court imposed condition to not operate any motor vehicle.

Regrettably, the male in the vehicle was ultimately deemed not to be wanted party Kwami Garwood.

Peel Police continue to look for the wanted suspect Kwami Garwood and appeal to anyone with information to contact investigators or Crimestoppers.”

Support the Family
The family is seeking counselling and funds to hire a lawyer to conduct a full autopsy of the situation to get justice.
