I first noticed that Dre sounded different on Eazy E's first album. The song Boyz In The Hood sounded unlike anything that came out of the East Coast (NYC)
Also D.O.C.'s album caught my attention, most notably The Formula
But when Always Into Something came out in the summer of 1991, I used to sit in front of the radio and listen to the song over and over again. It sounded like he was using breakbeats, but playing live instruments on top rather than using samples.
The beat really defines West Coast Hip Hop in the early/mid 90s.
