KFC’s in Berlin are facing mass walkouts after its staff were accused of racism for throwing out a group of black British customers. A group of three women and four men had spent over £100 on fast food after visiting a local carnival. \
They claim they were laughing at video clips they’d taken on their mobile phones when the store manager told them to be quiet, sparking an altercation that resulted in the police being called. Kelon Pierre, one of the group of Brits that were asked to leave told the German newspaper Die Welt: ‘Other guests around us also talked and laughed, that is why I wanted to know:
Why are you only talking to us? ‘We were the only black people in the restaurant and the only ones who were asked to be quieter.’ Police talking to the British tourists
One of the group recorded the incident on their mobile phone and posted it online on Monday, and since then it has been viewed over 250,000 times. During the video the group are told by police to leave the premises, saying they were called by the store manager to escort them out of the restaurant. Later on in the clip, the woman recording the video is asked to delete the file, but she refuses. British tourists outside the KFC restaurant
KFC Germany said in a statement that the group were ‘behaving inappropriately’ and disturbing other guests, which is why they were asked to leave. The branch denies that their staffs’ action was racially motivated. The fast food chain said they were not able to provide a ‘pleasant atmosphere’ for other diners because of the groups ‘inappropriate behaviour’, adding that they ‘had no choice but to call the police’. A German police spokeswoman denied accusations of racism, telling Berliner Morgenpost: ‘After futile attempts to resolve the situation, he [the KFC store manager] believed he was forced to contact the police in order to ensure protection of the staff and guests.’
