Here's a group that never gets mentioned. They're called The Showboys. They had a song that was featured on a Mr Magic compilation in 1986 called Drag Rap (Triggerman). The song wasn't popular in New York City so they kinda faded into obscurity.

But the song was popular Down South. It was so popular that it became the song that the DJ would play to get the party started. But The Showboys didn't know that the song was popular in The South so they never pursued a career and basically stopped making records and got regular jobs.

They didn't find out that their record was popular Down South until many years later.

When Mannie Fresh and 'nem got big as fuck, Showboys got a looooooooot of attention 'cause Mannie said it in plenty of intervviews that the whole sound of N.O. was built around what they called "Triggerman" aka "Drag Rap". I think I have an article in one of my old issues of Scratch where Mannie says something to the effect of damned near every record he's made has at least a little piece of Drag Rap in it.

Yeah I remember hearing a Wayne freestyle where he was rapping over the Triggerman beat. I think its on one of his mix tapes.

Like you said, if you really listen to the song its really the foundation of Trap.
