O.K. the Lauryn Hill thread got me thinking. I probably know some female MC songs that ya'll don't know about.
First up is Sequence. They are from South Carolina. They heard Rappers Delight and when the Sugarhill Gang came down to South Carolina to do a show they (Sequence) wrote a rap and performed it in front of Sylvia Robinson. They got a record deal and released Funk You Up in 1979.
So basically, they weren't from The Bronx, but they heard Rappers Delight and said, "We can do that".
Next up is Dimples Dee. As far as I know she's one of the first solo MCs. Marley Marl produced this song. It might even be Marley Marl's first production. Anyway, this song was big with teenage girls. All the girls could recite this from memory.
When Roxanne Roxanne by UTFO came out there were a whole gang of responses. But I'm not going to count all the people who made a response to Roxanne Roxanne. But Roxanne Shante had a career beyond the Roxanne fad.
Here's a song by Roxanne Shante with Biz Markie on the beatbox
This isn't Salt N Pepa's first song but I PROMISE YOU THIS SONG WILL ROCK A PARTY IN 2018!!!
This is Antoinette. She had beef with MC Lyte. They went back and forth for a few rounds until Lyte eventually won.
Here's Sweet T, On The Smooth Tip. This video got played every day on BET.
MC Lyte - Paper Thin....Nuff Said
Here's Queen Latifah and Monie Love. Personally I thought Queen Latifah was better than Lyte.
