the Black Smurfs
The Smurfs had an album in 1963 "the Black Smurfs", where a dangerous fly bit the Smurfs and they all turned black, stupid, violent.By biting other Smurfs in the tail, they all turn into black Smurfs.
In the 1980s, Hanna Barbera made cartoon videos based on the Smurfs cartoon, and in the Anglophone countries, the colour of the Smurfs was changed from Black to violet, in order to avoid racism
The comic book version remained unavailable in the Anglosphere until the 2010s, and then only the violet Smurf version was released.
So they had to be Black
