According to reports, a Texas man was killed in a standoff with Austin police after authorities arrived at his residence to issue a warrant for “nuisance abatement” over the length of his grass.

After the unidentified man refused to answer when police arrived, they left a copy of the warrant on his front door and gave the contractors the go-ahead to cut his lawn. Soon after, police say the man began firing shots at the contractors. SWAT was immediately called to the scene alongside mental health officers and a crisis negotiator.

Following several hours of negotiations, the man commenced firing shots at the officers leading to the use of a robot to enter the home. The robot revealed that the house was ablaze inside and they tried convincing the man to exit the residence. When he emerged armed from the garage, a SWAT officer fired a shot and the man “went down with a gunshot wound.”

He was removed from the garage and taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. His home was also engulfed in flames following the ordeal. The officer who fired the fatal shot was placed on administrative leave until an investigation is carried out.
