I'm Not Mad At This
The only one we fucked up on was 93
That is an interesting mix of dominant coastal / regional years. Posters who lived through it: does that line up with how you remember it?
Good question.
I divide the years by thirds;
1/3 = before the summer
2/3 = Summertime
3/3 = after the summer
1988- Slick Rick- Children's Story (runner up The Symphony)
1989- Public Enemy- Fight The Power (runner up The Formula)
1990- LL Cool J- Around The Way Girl (runner up Bonita Applebum)
1991- DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince- Summertime (runner up My Mind Playing Tricks On Me)
1992- Dr Dre featuring Snoop Doggy Dogg- Nuthin But a G Thang (runner up T.R.O.Y)
1993- Wu Tang Clan- C.R.E.A.M (runner up Keep Ya Head Up)
1994- Nas- NY State Of Mind (runner up I Seen a Man Die)
In other words, there are 3 seasons to a year.
The only year I would change is 1990. I would have given it to LL for Mama Said Knock You Out (the song) instead of Around The Way Girl.
1992 is a problem. T.R.O.Y. came out in the summer and was a summer anthem. Nuthin But A G Thing came out in December of 92 and was more of a 93 song.
Same with 93. C.R.E.A.M. is more of a 94 song imo. The album came out in Nov 93 and the single/video came out in 94.
Now that I look at it, it could have gone like this
92 - T.R.O.Y.
93 - Nuthin But A G Thing
94 - C.R.E.A.M.
Thats how I remember it.
It’s not based on when the song was released as a single it’s the year the song was released on a album. Should the rules change for future tournaments or keep it as is?
WHat does that have to do with anything?@5th Letter
In all seriousness I was born in Rhode Island and raised in Massachusetts and heard Nuthin But A G Thing for the first time in my life in December 92 while visiting relatives in California. Try to put that into perspective.
