The only one we fucked up on was 93

That is an interesting mix of dominant coastal / regional years. Posters who lived through it: does that line up with how you remember it?

There ain't a single year that LL had the GOAT song. Don't get me wrong, he had some dope shit like Radio, Rock The Bells, and I'm Bad, but there was better shit each year and to pick a joint like "Around The Way Girl"??? For 1990??? The year Amerikkka's Most dropped??? The Devil Made Me Do it??? Let The Rhythm Hit Em??? To Hell and Back???

Nah b. That year's bracket was completely fucked up.

Good question.

I divide the years by thirds;

1/3 = before the summer

2/3 = Summertime

3/3 = after the summer

1988- Slick Rick- Children's Story (runner up The Symphony)
1989- Public Enemy- Fight The Power (runner up The Formula)
1990- LL Cool J- Around The Way Girl (runner up Bonita Applebum)
1991- DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince- Summertime (runner up My Mind Playing Tricks On Me)
1992- Dr Dre featuring Snoop Doggy Dogg- Nuthin But a G Thang (runner up T.R.O.Y)
1993- Wu Tang Clan- C.R.E.A.M (runner up Keep Ya Head Up)
1994- Nas- NY State Of Mind (runner up I Seen a Man Die)

In other words, there are 3 seasons to a year.

The only year I would change is 1990. I would have given it to LL for Mama Said Knock You Out (the song) instead of Around The Way Girl.

1992 is a problem. T.R.O.Y. came out in the summer and was a summer anthem. Nuthin But A G Thing came out in December of 92 and was more of a 93 song.

Same with 93. C.R.E.A.M. is more of a 94 song imo. The album came out in Nov 93 and the single/video came out in 94.

Now that I look at it, it could have gone like this

92 - T.R.O.Y.
93 - Nuthin But A G Thing
94 - C.R.E.A.M.

This is the issue I raised with Big Poppa for '94. The single wasn't released until early '95 but had a slow takeoff. It didn't really "hit" so to speak, until the spring of '95. Even though the album was released in '94, Big Poppa was definitely a '95 joint.

It’s not based on when the song was released as a single it’s the year the song was released on a album. Should the rules change for future tournaments or keep it as is?

@5th Letter I would change the rules

In all seriousness I was born in Rhode Island and raised in Massachusetts and heard Nuthin But A G Thing for the first time in my life in December 92 while visiting relatives in California. Try to put that into perspective.

If this is just about the GOAT song that happened to come out in a particular year, then I think the current method is fine.

If we're talking about the best song as in the one that was most popular in a particular year, then the method should probably be modified as I doubt a song that comes out in 94 but gets most of its buzz in 95 can be considered as the best song in 94.

Yall are having 2 different debates. From how i took it, we're judging the BEST song dropped each year. Yall are arguing which song was the hottest, those are 2 separate things.

hottest=/= best

There seems to be some people who feel as if the rules should be changed. Let’s clear it up in here and give your suggestions or feedback on what you’d like to see.

What's wrong with the way it's been going, seems to me people have a problem when their favorite songs don't advance

we can keep it like it is.

I just have to switch gears on some of these 'cause, having lived through these years, I remember when the albums came out but also when the singles dropped and in some cases the two were different.
