Shame and stigma leave UK's male slaves sleeping on the streets

Men who have been enslaved are far less likely than women to speak out and are often perceived as being less in need of help

Male survivors of slavery in Britain are sleeping on the streets and many are too ashamed or afraid to seek support, putting them at renewed risk of being trafficked, a charity said on Thursday.

Men who have been enslaved are far less likely than women to speak out and are often perceived as being less in need of help - leaving them isolated, homeless and prey once more to traffickers - according to research by British charity Hestia.

More than half the 218 male former slaves supported by Hestia in London had slept rough, with victims having been forced to work on farms, construction sites and cannabis factories, sold for sex or used as slaves in people's homes.

Many male victims ended up on the streets after escaping their captors, while others were homeless men who had been repeatedly targeted by human traffickers, the charity said.

"The experiences of the men we are supporting are horrifying," said Patrick Ryan, chief executive of Hestia.

"If we are to successfully tackle modern slavery and give traumatised and brutalised victims the opportunity to recover, we must ensure they have access to safe and secure housing."

Ryan spoke to the Thomson Reuters Foundation ahead of Anti-Slavery Day on Thursday - set by Britain to raise awareness.

Britain is home to at least 136,000 slaves, trafficked from countries such as Albania, Vietnam and Nigeria, according to the Global Slavery Index by rights group Walk Free - a figure 10 times higher than the government's 2013 estimate.

More than half the 5,145 suspected slaves referred to the government for support last year were men - the first time more male than female victims were identified - official data shows.

One in two men supported by Hestia had spent time in jail or detention before being identified as possible slavery victims.

Several had been detained due to offences they were forced to commit by their traffickers, even though Britain's landmark anti-slavery law has a defence for victims who are coerced or compelled to carry out crimes, according to Hestia.

The vast majority of male victims showed signs of suffering from mental health issues such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, while half had no living family, Hestia said.

"In contrast to many of our female clients, men are not often single parents, giving them much more time to experience isolation and the need to be productive," said Lara Burdock, head of the Snowdrop Project, a charity that supports survivors.

Hestia called for specialist mental health services for male survivors, earlier and better identification of victims, as well as more data, and high-quality government provided housing.

Homelessness charity Crisis estimates there are 236,000 people sleeping rough or in temporary accommodation in Britain - with numbers increasing since 2010 amid a decline in housebuilding and rising property prices. Scust.

I know this will sound over simplified but why dont they just leave? Even if they dont have the money just start walking. They are sleeping on the ground anyway so why not just go somewhere else?

they came across the sea on overcrowded boats and abused just to get to europe and some crossed the alps in the dead of winter and even going that far they are often held up at the calais france tunnel entrance to get into the UK.

would you go home after all that?

I didn't say go home. But why stay to sleep on the ground? Gotta be something better.

that IS better.

the life they were escaping was war torn where the govt drops bombs on the people or the local warlord comes into town and rapes the women, kill the men and take the girls to rape later.
famine and drought adds to that.

not all the places the people come from are like that...but thats enough for the one that are from those places.

Its easier to overstand a situation than to understand a situation.

Saying they should just leave is an easy thing to say and is genuinely an easy solution. But thats like you complaining about your job and me saying get a new job, its that easy.

Any problem anyone has has an easy solution for others, but when you in it, it much harder to find that solution.

So saying something like just walk somewhere else is easy to say from where your sitting, but hard as fuck for the person living it.

Lmao. I hope you be keeping that same energy. Cause it's plenty of chicks out here getting their ass beat by their S/O and I don't see this sentiment from other women. Most of them not illegals in random countries with no access to funds or family either.

What are you talking about? The best advice you can give to a woman in an abusive relationship is to leave and leave quickly. Sadly too many won't listen.

I've noticed a lot more homeless Africans than in times past

Do you remember 90s early 00 the homeless situation in London was dreadful. Then it changed and to see a homeless person was a slight shock.

The conservative government came in and it's got out of control people lack empathy and don't realise the trap of the situation...

Regarding this article it's no surprise at all sadly these people are in such a desperate situation and the UK is sold as the place of opportunities they are exploited.

Also Britain is so toxic right now when these people do come forward the narrative of the country is well you shouldn't be here

The UK is no promise land it just marketed that way because the colonial days.

Also the UK likes to see what's happening in America and say to the world we are the sensible version when in fact it's just not so open about its madness

You are looking at this with a very naive mindset and you don't understand how trauma works

Sigh. I know very well that there are many reasons why people stay in abusive or oppressive situations. Financial, intimidation, Stockholm or just some delusion that things will get better whatever. The fact remains that the best advise is to give anyone in that type of situation is to get out. Whether or not they leave is ultimately on them. What else could you say?

Just curious leave to go where and how ? If it's a girl in an abusive relationship she just going to walk out the door and he's going to be ok with it?

In those situations they don't need advice they need action and support.

I'm not even trying to call you out just saying your view is naive
