RIP Ecstacy of Whodini

John Fletcher, better known as Ecstasy from the rap group Whodini, has reportedly passed away. Questlove broke the news on Wednesday (Dec. 23) in an Instagram tribute to the hip hop legend.

“One love to Ecstasy of the legendary #Whodini,” he said. “This man was legendary and a pivotal member of one of the most legendary groups in hip hop. This is sad man.”

Ecstasy, born on June 7, 1964, formed Whodini with Jalil Hutchins in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1982. DJ Grandmaster Dee later joined the group in 1986.

Together, they went on to record hit singles, “The Haunted House of Rock,” “Friends,” “Freaks Come Out at Night,” becoming a vital name in the hip hop scene.

Damn.

RIP

I listen to 5minutes of funk at least once a week

Yeah the summer of 84 was crazy. There was hella singles that came out that summer (Fast Life - Jeckyl & Hyde, Request Line - Rockmaster Scott & The Dynamic 3, Do The Right Thing - Lovebug Starski) but Russell Simmons put the game in a chokehold with the Fresh Fest.

Run DMC - Run DMC
Escape - Whodini
Fat Boys - Fat Boys
Ego Trip - Kurtis Blow

^^^ Those 4 albums all came out that summer and were all classics in their own way.

Whodini's album was more of an EP by today's standards. There were only 8 songs and one of them was the instrumental to 5 Minutes of Funk, so there were really 7 songs. But that sh!t was slamming!

It might not seem like much by today's standards but the summer of 84 was a breakout year for Hip Hop. And Whodini was at the top. We used to argue over who was better between Run DMC and Whodini. Run DMC was more hardcore Hip Hop while Whodini had more of a mature, R&B flavor.

This song was on the CD of Back In Black, but CDs weren't that common in 1986 so I heard this song for the first time in the downloading era (don't remember what year but it was after 2000)

I'll say this much;

If you were going to make a "Hip Hop Hits of the 80s" playlist (with, say 15 songs), you'd absolutely have to have at least 1 Whodini song.

RIP

I was listening to Freaks Come Out At Night earlier today and thinking about how forgotten Whodini is.

RIP to him.

I was jammin' that "One Love" track a few months ago. The performance they put on at Apollo was exciting to watch too. Dude is part of a legendary group.
