The SOS Band were a hot R&B group in the early to mid 80s.
But Prince was a mega star, the movie Purple Rain was a classic. In 1984 he was on the same level as Michael Jackson. People used to debate (and they still do) about who's better between Prince & MJ. I've never heard anybody debate about who's better between Prince vs The SOS Band.
Prince wasn't just a R&B star with R&B hits. He was a top 40 star with songs on the R&B charts and the top 40 charts.
I like the SOS Band and if I were on a desert Island, I wouldn't mind having their greatest hits. But Prince is on another level and Purple Rain is one of his most memorable songs.
