Question to the Old heads... Was Biggie release "Who Shot Ya" about Pac or was he lying saying it wasn't?

Bitch mob
Pac gets shot 5 times in 1994, this song releases later in the year while Pac was in jail. Can't even blame Pac it's horrible optics man.

Biggie denied the song had anything to do with Pac until he died. Allegedly it was recorded months before Pac got shot but it was left off Ready to Die. I personally don’t think it has anything to do with it, but given the timing they should have never released it when they did.

I don't think biggie is as innocent as everyone made him seem. I think Jay z took a lot of ideas from big. Like Jay will diss people on record, but they will be very light disses and never mention them by name. Often subliminal. Like a true hip hop head who follows the happenings of the industry and the events that go on within it can point out who he's dissing, but the average fan would not and Jay z will play it off like he never intended the line to be aimed at anyone in particular or he just won't acknowledge it at all.

I think big could have done very similar things.

SUPER poor optics man. Like I said it's unfortunate how it all shaked out. Watching that Pac movie reminded me of this

are there any lyrics in the song that make it seem like it was about pac? or was it just the title?
Good question, even back then there wasnt anything in that song to me that was directed at Pac. Kinda crazy that Pac thought Who Shot Ya and I Shot Ya were about him, When Big and LL were going at each other...I get the timing thing, tho....

nothing direct, but biggie generally was talking like the don that could have anyone taken out at anytime
“brave nigga, turned front page nigga”
pac was in the front page of the papers after he was shot, and it wasn’t like any ol shooting was making front page news in 1994

“you rewind this, bad boy behind this”
doesn’t take too much of a leap for pac to think that line was directly about him

then at the end puff constantly repeating “east coast”
yes he does say “west coast” a couple of times too, but it felt to me like a boast saying i run this side

then just throw in the general consensus that brooklyn dudes are mad grimey and sneaky, lolol

pac gets shot at a studio, sees biggie and puffy there with jimmy henchman
he goes to prison then hears this song from biggie where biggie talking mad shit about how he a don and can have anyone clipped and constantly repeating “who shot ya?” as he describes shooting mf’ers
“bad boy behind this”
“east coast motherfucker”

then top it off with biggie at the end talking shit as he puts a gun in a dudes mouth and then you hear five shots followed by “WHO SHOT YA!!!!”

i mean come on, if i’m pac im thinking that shit is about me and taunting me

and not to add on and on to this, but i just wanted to say

even if biggie had recorded this song in full wayyyy before, diddy is a marketing genius. he knew exactly what the streets would be saying and he knew it would create a nice buzz for biggie and keep his name popping as people speculated if it was about pac

if Heavy D had been gunned down at the studio instead of Tupac, there is no way puffy would have released the song at that time…he would have saved it

he just didn’t anticipate that suge would come to the rescue and escalate it even further.

Where was this song released?
I never heard it down here until later on in life.

Recording was done differently back then, some songs were left off albums.

It felt like he was from down here in Baltimore

Pac shot in November '94
Song released February '95

We thought it was about about Pac..... We were 12... The Internet wasn't a regular thing then ... All we had was local radio... And they were literally having conversations on our stations on whether it was about Pac.... We in middle school where someone always gotta cousin from NY who said it was about Pac.

At the time, we all thought it was

Its before my time but Pac didnt have a daughter, so the 'electrical tape around your daughter' line doesnt make sense... Could just aswell be a sub to Nas, like 'Kick In The Door'...

Though the ill timed release could just had been to troll Pac, like he just got shot thats release it now to troll him and cause some album promotion...

We didn't hear down here, that's why I asked where and when was it released?

Was Pac a huge star back in 94 that folks cared?

I don't think Pac had anything out at the time in 1994 that was burning up the radio or charts,

Who ran the rap game in 1994?

Much smaller less known scale

But this type of action got Fat Tone killed after Mac Dre got killed in Kansas City

Fat Tone was was a local KC rapper dropping all kinds of innuendo comparable to a "who shot ya" and ultimately paid the price for it

They knew what they were doin droppin that song. They know how niggas would process that shit....

i don’t know who “ran the rap game” in 1994
there were many acts doing well

tupac was certainly one of the well known faces. he already had two albums and spawned hits like i get around, brenda got a baby, trapped and when my homies call
he also had already starred in juice and poetic justice
he certainly was one of the bigger stars in rap

me against the world and above the rim came out while he was in prison and that only bolstered him more

Yeah that "electrical tape around your daughter" line doesn't make sense if it was aimed at 2Pac.
