I remember circa 1999-2001 there was a dichotomy in Hip Hop. For some reason backpackers made the fictitious claim that you can't like Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Common and like Master P, Jay Z and DMX too. The backpacker's rule was that you have to like either conscious rap or commercial rap but liking both was out of the question. (It was similar to the East/West beef, you could like one or the other but you couldn't like both).
