People furious with Deion Sanders for insane hypocrisy

You're crazy if you don't think there are a lot of black people criticizing Deion too. I don't think it's wrong for him to take a better job, but he handled things poorly and isn't the one that should be speaking on how many HBCU students made it to the NFL.

His stance is still better than Shannon Sharpe's though.

I disagree. His coming to an HBCU brought attention to a lot of young Black males and who may didn't know they have a place created just for them.

JSU got a lot of free press and money that PWIs get from all groups of people.

He could have easily went to FSU and built his career there.

And I honestly feel like if you didn't go to an HBCU you have no dog in this fight. So if you're Black and went to a PWI or didn't even attend school, your view is invalid imo.

It brought attention for a while, but he left abruptly and took all his people with him. I think in the end, he did more harm than good especially since he went out basically bashing the school and saying that he couldn't get the support he needed from the HBCU, which exactly the kind of sentiment he was supposedly trying to fight.

I also disagree that only people that went to HBCU's get to care. I went to an HBCU, but that doesn't mean that I'm the only one that gets to care. HBCU's are good for the black community in general, so every black person should care if they thrive or not.

The school was stealing from him
The kids at the school was stealing from him
The school didn’t want to pay his assistants and told him he had to pay for them

Jackson State is the embodiment of what’s wrong with ducking over fucks that’s actually helping you

Everybody got a side to the story, and anyone who's been to an HBCU knows that the administration/management is usually fucked up, so I wouldn't discount the possibility that Deion was screwed in some way, but I don't buy that he's innocent in this matter.

Buuutt...again. How did HE mishandled it? Especially when he was coming outta his own pocket to help build their practice facility? When the school was stealing money from the ticket sales of their games.

And of course he's gonna take his peoples wit him. That's what a coach does wit his/her coaching staff when they go somewhere else. But he also made sure one of them became the next HC of JSU b4 he left. Were you aware of that?

And he never hid the fact that if a power 5 school called him...he'd entertained the conversation. Newsflash...that's nothing new.

Again, two sides to every story. Everything you're telling me is what Deion said. I have no idea what was agreed upon with regards who would pay for the practice facility. If the school told him they couldn't afford what he wanted from the start, and he felt it was necessary and paid for it. That's on him. I have no idea what the parties agreed to as far as what percentage of game money would go to the school. Was the school really stealing or did they just take a bigger piece of the pie than Deion wanted. Again, I'm not saying he's lying. I'm inclined to believe him because I know how messed up administration/management can be at HBCUs. I'm just saying that school officials paint a different story than Deion.

I'm not talking about Deion taking staff with him. He took recruits too. So basically he went to JSU, made a name for himself as a coach, then left as soon as he got a PWI gig, undid pretty much any good work he had done with the program as far as building it, and t hen spit on the school on his way out. How is that a good look? He basically went into a problematic situation claiming that he wanted to make change, got what he wanted from that situation, and then bounced for greener pastures while bashing that situation for being problematic. Was JSU fucked up in this situation? Probably, but he had to know that was the case going into it. If he didn't, that was his fault because a conversation with anyone who's ever been to an HBCU would have informed him that he would have to deal with some challenges that exist in the very structure of the school. If he wasn't down for that, he shouldn't have gone in trying to set himself up as the beacon for HBCU salvation.

I agree with some of your points, but I would like to point out that he wanted to coach at Florida State but they didn’t want to hire him at the time. He took the Jackson State job because not many PWI’s were willing to just let him be the head coach of their institution without prior experience at that level.

He did help Jackson State a lot, but he definitely used that school to spring board him and his son to a “better” (in his eyes) situation. I personally have no problem with anyone getting an opportunity that they deem is better and taking it.

I do think it’s sad that more black people don't try and help build the HBCU’s up. The donor list for PWI’s is massive and riddled with wealthy individuals. Just imagine how nicer these HBCU’s would be if 20% of black pro athletes, not even the doctors, lawyers, etc.. went to HBCU’s and actually donated to this schools once they got their deals.

I know it’s not fair to put that much weight on kids and average to poor families trying to do what’s best for themselves, but man one can dream.

And can you guess who these people are?

Definitely not HBCU graduates like myself. I'm happy to see any Black man win.and appreciate DS for his candid response however contrived it may be.

Like I get it coaches move from small schools to big schools no big deal but the way he carried it was what lead to this.

I very much respect your opinion bc you went to an HBCU and could have easily went to a PWI but saw the value of the education and the sense of community that HBCUs instill in their students. I am assuming.

But as the opinions of others about HBCUs who haven't attended one, it's hard to judge something you never experience. IMO

I do acknowledge DS said a few disparaging remarks about the school but he left it in a better place then it was before he got there. Look who got drafted, a player from JSU. So he had some impact that the other professional sports organization will now recognize.

TBF the school was already in deficit.

You have to understand that HBCUs are already underfunded so if DS was going to use this opportunity to help himself and his career, he should have been prepared for the consequences of that scenario.

It's not as if DS didn't gain anything from his altruism.

A lot of the school fundings for HBCUs come from federal and state grants. Private donations don't even compare to PWIs bc a lot of Black alumni aren't in the predicament to give back through booster clubs. The advantage of going to a PWI is the generational wealth and legacy.

As an HBCU legacy myself, it's rare to find others who have have been attending college for generations especially since the majority of the students who attend them are first generation and come from humble backgrounds.

This is unfortunate occurrence that has caused a lot of them to lose accreditation and even some closed bc of it

I hate that the students are lumped in the mix bc of poor management and direction.
