Musical Family Tree

Joshie Kahn

"I can fix that"
The concept of this game is to basically bridge the gap between two artists with at least 10-15 or longer years between they're debut albums, mixtapes, or other projects. Like the other tournaments we can choose our picks (enough to make it to a finals, so with 6 players they each choose a set for the opening round and then a set for the finals if they make it). We'll keep the judging system as we have it currently, but there will be a time limit on building your "tree", so make sure you have time before participating.

Here's how a participant would play the game for an example:

Bridge the gap between Rakim and Kendrick Lamar-

Rakim would be the start and you would then add on other artist like jay-z, nas, tupac etc. after you've made your case. When making your case you should list examples of their influence on the newer artist (you can list lyrics or songs for example) When you're done building your case the "tree" should look like this for a tl;dr:

Rakim+Tupac+Nas+Jay = Kendrick

That's the basic idea, I'm sure you if you're creative you can make something that looks like a legit family tree. If you feel you can make it better chime in

@Omega_Goldie @Mrs.CheatCity @Petty Officer Du @AP21 @CheatCity

This might be a little too subjective to judge properly. It'll essentially be a debate about artists.

I'm down. I think I understand what you're saying but can you provide a full example of what u mean.

Let's use the Rakim/Kendrick example again:

Rakim is known for his lyricism and conscious tone throughout his music. Kendrick has a very similar approach, and I feel with Rakim being one of the first to marry the concepts so well in hiphop, he's been the blueprint to follow since his debut. So, picturing rakim as the base we would list his successors, basically people who've taken either the lyrical approach or the conscious approach or both (Nas, Jay, common, GFK, RZA, pac, big etc) and how they lead to kendrick. You would choose a few artists (maybe 3?) and then list examples (lyrics/songs) that show their influences on the kendrick.

I can't provide super obvious examples because I just don't have the experience some yall do with hip hop

Once you finished listing examples you'd physically make the tree and have it judged against your opponents, whoever the judges decides made the better tree will advance or win.

Like @Judge_Judah said it's a bit subjective or debatey and that's why I wanted to make the idea public, to see if we can make it more of a game.

i was thinking 7 degrees of kevin bacon type rules......

but with rappers..... rakim to kendrick in least amount of steps

rakim was in the watcher 2 with jay and dre

dre was in compton with kendrick

2 steps

I think it needs to be something specific. Like song names or producers, opposed to styles , cuz thats subjective.

Alright I've revised the game with some of the ideas from this thread:

We still have the family tree concept but instead of showing influences through a long winded paragraph like originally suggested, I'll use goldie's idea of using songs to make it less debatey and more direct. We'll still use two artists and bridge the gap between them using songs.

We'll have rounds were the subjects will be aspects that both the base artist and the future artist have in common. (lyricism, similar rhyme schemes, beats, subject matter etc) I'll allow a song from the "base" artist to be used and a song from the "future" artist to be used, with a song from two other artists influenced by the "base" that have had an influence on the "future" (I hope that's understandable).

What do yall think?

Somehow my dude, you made it more complicated then the original OP.

Nah, it's more direct than the op. In the op, you'd have to post lyrics, subject matter, etc and then explain how they connect the "base" to the "future", with the new way, you just post songs from the base to the middle to the future and explain the similarities carried between them.

Can it be more tangible shit, than subjective.

Tangible example: samples

Subjective: kanye= asap , cuz rocky got his style from kanye.

I was thinking just keeping it based on the music. The tree has to be atleast 3 parts.

Example:

This

Gave us

and that gave us

My challenge to anyone to come up with a better tree.

"Them rings and things u sing about, bring em out
It's hard to yell, with the barrel in ur mouth"

Biggie (marked it at the spot)

Jay "borrowed" those bars

Ti sampled Jay saying those bars
