I want to start a series where we break down movies that can be interpreted multiple different ways and have theories on what the movie's message was.

For today I want to start with 2001: A Space Odyssey, directed by one of the goats Stanley Kubrick.

Out of nearly 2 and a half hours of movie, only 40 mins has dialog, which leaves much to the imagination.

What do you think is the message 2001 was trying to convey?

If yall got any recommendations on movies that we should break down let me know.

A couple other movies i had in mind were: Taxi Driver, Eyes Wide Shut, American Psycho.

I think it was a foreshadowing if what we have today with the dawn of AI. Humans make tools but in the wrong hands it can lead to a lot of death and destruction.

Who else fell asleep the first time they saw this movie?
All those extended space shots and orchestra music did a nigga in.

lmaoooo i passed df outta the first time i watched it.

But CS @ humans and AI

I honestly think it was about how smart man really isn't.

Like throughout history..... Man has traditionally confident as fuck and 100% have no clue what the fuck is going on.... Or how far shit really is over our heads...

And we consistently do that shit.....

Like classic examples are figuring it the world isn't flat and germs exist. Like reading up on that shit is almost comedy cuz the smartest niggaz in the world was dead ass wrong.

The movie shows that ignorant arrogance of man going back to the primitive days when humans were just evolving. Even back then, they was beefing hard over some shit that they prolly felt mad confident about.... Only for it to take something none of them could possibly grasp that inspired one side to prevail.

Confident that whatever they did was right.

All the way up to the future with man creating a computer smarter than they were and still trying to make sense of shit way beyond their grasp.

It definitely has religious tones everywhere, cuz again.... What's religion other than man trying to explain some shit that is way over his head, yet he's 100% confident they got it all right....

That's how I looked at it tho

Yea I've never seen this either lmao

American psycho and eyes wide shut are good ones to get into. @ me when those come up so I can watch em again

Inception is another one to discuss

I watched on Netflix recently. Did they take it off??

I Think The Obvious Interpretation Is Evolution

From The Simians In The First Third Discovering Tools And Weapons

To Modern Humans Having The Ease And Comfort Of Space Travel

To The Starchild That Was Able To Exist In The Vacuum Of Space Unaided

All Of Course With The Help Of The Mysterious Monolith

Tons Of Theories Tho....This One Is To Me Was The First One That Came To Mind

I have 2 theories on this movie. My first one aligns with the one @OhMars said earlier in the thread. Pretty much a warning on how humans can/will eventually fall victim to AI.

My 2nd theory is how everything's a cycle and repeats itself. So once we as humans have reached the highest level we can, which we're pretty much at with robots, cloning, etc; a new form of species will emerge on earth (i think that's what this was about)

And we'll be starting from scratch as that new species.

evolution, aliens, religious

starts w apes, understanding what they’re there for

man advances to space, they trigger the monolith

it sends them to further investigate

once they’re at a certain point, human is transformed into a “spirit” essentially

god-like beings watching over life

I gotta go rewatch this now.
