My father was quite possibly one of the most fucked up people I've ever encountered in life.
And the only negative thing my mother ever said about him was that he just doesn't know how to be a father because he never really grew up himself. And that wasn't till I was like 25-30
When I was a kid she let me develope my own impression of him.

I understand trying to protect your child, but it's a cold world out here.
Ain't no better way to deal with all the fucked people you gonna deal with in life than learning to deal with a fucked up parent.
You learn about liars. You learn about selfish and inconsiderate people. You learn how to not define your self by someone else terms.
They're very harsh and difficult lessons, but lessons none the less.
The dependable parent might feel the desire to try to prevent their kid from those experiences... But I think it's better to let them go through the disappointing, and just help them work thru it
