I got inspired to make this thread when somebody posted I Can't Get With That in another thread. The song on the other side, In My Lifetime, was on Doo Wop's 95 Live. I didn't think much of it at the time but that's when Jay Z started his run.
Anyway, for those that do not know, the mixtape scene in the mid 90s was similar to the way the internet works now. A mixtape would hit 125th st in Harlem on, say, a Monday. Inevitably a tourist would buy the mixtape that day and fly back home wherever he was from (Europe, Japan, California, etc.) I was living in Massachusetts at the time. It didn't take long for the mixtapes to reach Boston. We probably got them the same week they were released in NYC.
