I can explain what James Brown did.

Prior to James Brown, R&B had a Motown sound





James Brown had a "boom bap" feel. In other words, the rhythm of the drums was different than what Motown was doing.

James Brown basically invented the "Boom Bap" sound







I guess it's similar to how Dr Dre invented G-Funk or how No Limit invented Bounce music (or whatever that style is called)
