Here's the thing about Prince

When he came out in the late 70s he was just another artist that released albums. Like most artists, his albums had a few hits that made the top 10 charts.

But around 1982, he released a double album called 1999 around the same time Thriller was released (I remember because my brother won a contest at the local radio station and they gave him a handful of records as a prize, Thriller and 1999 were two of the albums and they were new at the time.)

Thriller went on to sell infinite records and while 1999 was a great album, it got outshined by Thriller.

So Prince went back to the drawing board and dropped Purple Rain; a 5 mic album with a movie. Purple Rain produced a few top 10 hits, but the other groups in the movie (Apollonia 6 and The Time) also had some hits from the same movie that Prince produced. By 1985 Prince was on top of the game and could produce hits at will.

But he thought the music industry was unfair to the artists in the way they take 95% of the royalties and leave the artist with pennies. So Prince built his own recording studio and started making his own music so there wouldn't be any recoupable expenses. But the record label still owned the masters.

So to get back at the record labels, he'd make one hit song, and then the rest of the album would be experimental (read: trash). From the mid 80s up until he died he'd have one hit on the album and the rest of the album was intentionally weird and unlistenable. Some of his albus were better than others. Sign Of The Times was cool. Parade was alright.

Point being: If you pick up a random Prince album, it might only have one good song on it. But he intentionally made the album that way because he wanted to "stick it to the man".

You could make a double CD of Prince hits/songs Prince produced and it would be as good as anybody else's double CD of hits/songs they produced.
