How Come Q-Tip's Solo Career Didn't Pan Out?

5 Grand

Old School Godfather
Those beats on the first few Tribe albums were amongst the best beats in Hip Hop. Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders were both 5 mics in my opinion.

He might not have been as good as Nas or Biggie but his lyrics got better with each album.

Also, he was down with J Dilla who could have helped him with the production.

That being said, I know he dropped a few solo projects but I've never heard them. And I was the biggest Tribe fan in the 90s.

So how come Q-Tip's solo career didn't pan out? Seems like Common, The Roots, Mos Def and Talb Kweli were making the same style of music but they seemed to have more success in the early 00s than Q-Tip.

i personally never liked his voice and delivery the times I tried to listen to him

and i like certain laid back, kinda monotone artists...but he just doesnt sound the least bit interested in anything he's saying

sounds like he's looking out the window while he raps, watching all the other kids play

Label control. Arista shelved Kamaal The Abstract, it was released 8 years after it was originally recorded.

Plus 3 albums over the course of 21 years isn't going to create a stable career. Very few artists can be successful with that few albums.

That's my point. How come he didn't release 10 solo albums between 2000-2020?

What? Vibrant thing ain't do it for you..pause hahaha

Yeah, dude can spit.
Had a few hits, with some dope album cuts if you're a real fan.

I don't think he had the charisma or star power to do much more.... But he did a lot not than most

I always felt Q-Tip could've had a little more impact as a solo artist..thought he had a dope flow, good voice for records, pen game was nice, creative, good ear for beats.

With that being said I enjoyed his solo work and of course his stuff with Tribe and his production....overall he had a great career

The reason Imade this th thread is because that album Tribe put out a few years ago Thank You For Your Service was a 5 mic classic imo. It's everything a Tribe Called Quest fan could ask for.

So obviously he's still got it.

so what do you expect from him? Like you said he's still got it, he can rap and produce. Do you think he should have put more albums out? Been top of the charts?
