Yeah hip hop started gather more mainstream momentum and commercialisation, but when you look back compared to today's era the commercial tunes back then would still be considered underground hip hop or skilful lol People that dissed a lot of the tunes now look back fondly...

Think how dope the radio stations were back then, so many dope shows, Stretch and Bobbito, Sway, Angie, Flex, Kay Slay etc all of them playing tunes they liked or playing tunes people rang up for, braking new hits and artists etc supporting the culture...
