George Clinton On Drink Champs

5 Grand

Old School Godfather
This is really interesting.

He's talking about early radio.

He's saying that in the 50s and 60s, AM radio controlled everything. AM radio was mono, meaning one speaker. Even if you had two speakers, it would be the same thing coming out of each speaker.

But when FM radio came around, it was new and different. The signal was more clear and it was in stereo, meaning you could have one instrument playing out of the left speaker and another instrument coming out of the right speaker. A lot of music in the mid to late 60s was mixed in stereo and sounds different than what was coming out in mono.

He said that the AM stations were the commercial stations and the FM stations were the underground stations.

Just to let you know the difference, here is I Want You Back by The Jackson 5 in stereo.

Notice that some instruments are panned to the left and other instruments are panned to the right.

If you were listening to this song on AM it would be in mono, but if you were listening to the same song on FM radio, the instruments would be panned to the left and right.
