My friend posted this on FB and I want to know your thoughts...

“I just got into an argument with one of my friends who happens to a white male.

He is in a historically black fraternity (not mine) and is dating a black woman. In his bio on Instagram, he had “black lives matter” written. In general, I would say he’s normally understanding and empathetic of what black people go through.

Now he told me the other week that he has aspirations to be a police officer. i gave an internal side eye because the narrative of a white male police officer isn’t good. But i still support my homie doing what he’s passionate about.

Today he told me that he was cleaning up his social media because he has began the interview process. The particular district that he wants to work for has a history of racism. He was adamant about wanting to work for this district because it’s in his hometown and because he wants to do what he can to change the mindset of things.

That all sounds good until he told me when he was cleaning up his social media of ignorant things (that he used to say when he didn’t know better in the past) that he also removed “black lives matter” from his bio.

I was offended and disappointed in him.

Now he says he is still prideful of the movement and has no issues with expressing his support for it but he felt it unwise to leave a direct line of communication when they interview him. He says if he’s asked about how he feels about it, he will not deny his support but he wanted to temporarily omit it so that there is not a target on his back.

I explained to him that he was exercising privilege. I cannot walk into an interview and hide my blackness but he has the option to temporarily hide his support for something in order to get a job. We argued and are firm in our stances. Im not going to stop being his friend but i definitely look at him differently. Am i tripping?”

and I want to know your thoughts. Should someone have to hide their beliefs in order to get a job? is this white persons decision to take down their post in support of BLM somewhat cowardly or even racist? do you think homie was outta pocket for checking him?

I dont think homie was out of pocket for checking Chad police ass. I dont think one good cop can change an entire police station known to be racist either. A black president couldnt end racism so i doubt the one good white cop is gonna change a whole culture. He might be not as hard on minorities and poor people individually which is alright but not enough.

As far as taking things off your social network to get jobs I get that especially if your views are extreme and you got bills to pay. Buuuuuuuuuuut i dont want to work a place where one side is watching fox news but i have to erase anything relating to my blackness to even get the job.

In this scenario he is white and while he can erase black lives matter what about his frat. People put their frat on their resume. Couldnt his job look up his frat find out it a black greek org and still go the other way.

Also im not trusting a white dude who is very social with us but sees nothing wrong with becoming a cop. Thats odd to me.

I mean I see why he did it. I mean a lot of folks have done the same when applying for the job they want. So it's understandable.

Him wanting to work in a racist po-leese to dept. to help "clean" things up...

giphy (1) (1).gif

Unless he makes Chief in the next 5 years, and gets rid of ALL the racist cops in that district...then it's gonna be business as usual.

He's gonna end up defending his belief....his black friends...his black woman regardless if he has his social media up.

He's white and is ashamed he let it be known how he feels by doing that.

The department is going to brainwash him before he ever makes a big impact. I've seen it happen to a few black officers with good intentions..

Dope thread, @Race Jones. Come give a female poster a compliment in my thread so I can send you 5mil.

A police Chief is like a president in many ways. Plenty of power but mostly figurehead representation for the organization.

The police commissions are the ones who hold the systemic power. They are the ones who are like a preliminary jury before it gets tried. They go thru their internal processes which then recommend to the prosecutor whether or not to press charges based on their specific department policy.

I say that to say that one person changing an entire culture is very unlikely. It's far more likely to come from intense pressure from outside

Him taking down the BLM shit ain’t a big deal to me. The real test will be him on the job & how he reacts to the racist bullshit. Many an officer cracks under that pressure White & Black. We’ll see.

Exactly.

Is he willing to report is his colleagues if he sees them doing racist shyt? Is he gonna speak up or be like the rest of them and remain silent?

he may have good intentions but he will eventually get fed up with the lack of change he would like to see implemented and will eventually fall in line.

I know several teachers and police officers who had good intentions but eventually went down that path.

Also, his girlfriend and him will eventually socialize with other police officers and their wives outside of the workplace (bowling, softball, drinking at a bar, etc) and this may cloud his judgment when it comes to do whats right when his coworker steps out of line

yea...dude has no idea of whats going on.

nigga thinking he gonna make a change.....

thats his white privilege showing
