I'm not even sure why this is controversial. A lot of young artists wish they could get a boost from an artist that's already poppin.
That’s J Cole’s rival it was insulting to ask him for help at that time. Had Drake jumped on a song with Cole and it hit, I don’t think Cole’s career would’ve been the same.

So there’s 3 parts to this
Jay- as an executive, he was right to try to get his artist a hit record. In order to build buzz for his album. Remember, Cole was not a established artist at this time
Cole- Def had a reason to be upset and that was the reaction you want from a young hungry artist. “Don’t hand me nothing, I’ll figure it out”
Drake- Awkward position to be in lol
