Four people were arrested amid the violence on Saturday, which broke out when the pro-Trump group's scheduled march encountered an opposing group associated with a second nearby rally. Neither rally was directly related to President Donald Trump's immigration policy, which drew peaceful protests elsewhere in Portland and across the country on Saturday. Police said four people were transported to area hospitals by ambulance, three with non serious injuries and one with a serious but non-life threatening injury. NYPD Opens Criminal Probe Of Far-Right Proud Boys After Manhattan Brawl

The New York Police Department announced over the weekend that it has opened a criminal probe into the Proud Boys, a far-right fraternal organization.


Deputy Commissioner John Miller told the New York Times that the group was “the subject of a regular criminal investigation” following their involvement in a violent brawl outside a local Manhattan GOP club earlier this month.

Miller told the Times he was aware of the legal constraints on law enforcement probes of political groups but that “violence is violence.”

The probe marks the latest fallout from the Oct. 12 event at the Metropolitan Republican Club, where Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes made a speech mocking the 1960 assassination of a Japanese socialist leader. After the speech ended, McInnes’ followers clashed with anti-racist activists waiting outside. Three protesters were arrested at the scene.

The NYPD subsequently announced they were searching for 12 other participants in the melee, and last week arrested two suspected members of the Proud Boys. Geoffrey Young, 38, was charged with misdemeanor rioting and misdemeanor attempted assault. The Times reported that John Kinsman, 39, was charged with rioting, attempted gang assault and possession of a weapon—all felonies.

Lawyers for both men denied that their clients instigated the fights during appearances in Manhattan Criminal Court, according to the newspaper.

McInnes told the Times he was helping broker the surrender of the other seven Proud Boys that the police want to bring into custody. The NYPD is also pursuing the arrests of three other protesters.

McInnes did not immediately respond to TPM’s request for comment.

The Southern Poverty Law Center designates the Proud Boys as a hate group because of the Islamophobic, misogynist and racist views its members espouse.

3 More Proud Boys Members Arrested After Manhattan Brawl


NEW YORK (AP) — Three more members of the far-right Proud Boys group have been arrested in connection with an Oct. 12 street brawl after the group’s founder spoke at a New York Republican club.

New York City police say the men turned themselves in Monday, bringing the total number of arrests to eight.

Two other Proud Boys members were arrested Friday. Three protesters were arrested for an alleged robbery the night of the brawl.

Police have said they’re looking to arrest nine Proud Boys in all and three additional protesters.

Security video shows a protester throwing a bottle and people kicking and punching each other.

All three men arrested Monday were charged with riot and assault.

Maxwell Hare, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was also charged with gang assault and criminal weapon possession.

Information on the 26-year-old’s lawyer wasn’t immediately available.

Gavin McInnes Banned From Facebook And Instagram After Proud Boys Brawl

NEW YORK (AP) — The far-right Proud Boys and their founder, Gavin McInnes, have been banned from Facebook and Instagram because of policies against hate groups.

McInnes called the ban censorship in an email Wednesday. He said “the left” is “ramping up the hysteria with fake news” ahead of next week’s elections.

The Southern Poverty Law Center uses the hate group label for the all-male Proud Boys. But the group identifies as “western chauvinists” and say they “refuse to apologize for creating the modern world.”

Several people were arrested after Proud Boys members clashed with anti-fascist protesters in Manhattan on Oct. 12 following a speech by McInnes.

A spokeswoman for Facebook, which also owns Instagram, said in a statement that the company bans content from hate groups “when we become aware of it.”
