Earlier this week, Snoop Dogg released a brilliant music video in the form of “Lavender.” In it, suburbia is populated by literal clowns, men, women, and children whose faces are adorned to look like circus entertainers. Starring Michael Rapaport, the video is a remix to BADBADNOTGOOD’s Kaytranada produced song of the same name, but Snoop Dogg opted to take the beat and run in a political direction. Rapping about police brutality, systemic oppression, and America’s various failures to protect and serve all of its people, Snoop Dogg took a bold step in the clip, playing a man (notably free of clown makeup) who assassinates the clown president, covered in orange face paint and sporting a Trump-like hairdo.
Snoop Dogg is a legend. In fact, he recently received the I Am Hip-Hop Award from BET, an honor long overdue for the artist who holds the record for most Grammy nominations with no win. With countless iconic Rap records under his belt, platinum-selling music, and a permanent place in pop culture, he is arguably one of the most successful artists in music history, period. But, to Donald Trump, he’s now failing. At least, that’s what Trump tweeted about the Long Beach legend early this morning. Apparently, the Commander-in-Chief not only has enough down time to watch a Snoop Dogg video, but also to take to Twitter to voice his outrage about the satirical (although not exactly subdued) piece of work.
Yesterday (March 14), another well-known politician took umbrage with the video. Marco Rubio (whom Heads may recall as the presidential candidate made a very public comment about the size of Donald Trump’s hands), said in a statement “We’ve had presidents assassinated before in this country, so anything like that is really something we should be very careful about.” Speaking with TMZ, another former presidential candidate, Ted Cruz, proclaimed it’s “in poor taste to be making fun of murdering someone, and in particular assassinating the president.” Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, addressed the rapper directly, saying “Snoop owes the president an apology.”
Snoop has yet to respond but Im sure it will go a little something like this....
