Here is an interview on Vlad TV with Dave Mays.
He is talking about how The Source started. I grew up in Boston, I remember I used to listen to 95.3 when Dave Mays and Jonathan Schecter had their radio show.
I vividly remember back then 87/88 there was no Hip Hop media. There were magazines like Rolling Stone and Spin that were basically Rock magazines. They would typically have a small paragraph about a popular rap group like Run DMC or Salt N Pepa, but there were no long articles.
On their radio show they used to read Hip Hop news, like when somebody was releasing an album, or an upcoming show in Boston.
I remember calling WHRB one day when I was 14 years old. I told them they should start a magazine similar to Rolling Stone or Spin, but not like Right On or Black Beat (teen magazines) I said they should start a magazine that is geared towards adults with a higher reading comprehension than the teen magazines. Later, when I'd listen to their radio show they said if you called in and gave them your mailing address they mail you a newsletter. I remember getting the very first edition of The Source in the mail. It was a newsletter folded into thirds.
Basically I'm saying that I called WHRB and spoke to Dave Mays and Jon Schecter and suggested that they create a magazine similar to Rolling Stone or Spin Magazine.
I'm saying that when I was 14, I gave them the idea to start The Source
