i was born in 82...
i ain't start listening to hip hop seriously till i was like 13...which was around 1995
but from the first video, cold crush had the better flow imo
Appreciate the response.
It doesn't really matter when you were born. Hip Hop has a heritage and a history and it's not that deep or complicated.
Everybody who considers themselves more than just a casual listener should know a few things about the origin of Hip Hop and the pioneers and why those people are considered pioneers and what they did.
For example, Grandwizard Theodore invented scratching. Everybody on the board should know that. His most memorable feature is in the movie Wildstyle.
There's a few tapes everybody should listen to at least once:
- Harlem World Christmas Rappers Convention 1981 (This was when Kool Moe Dee dissed Busy B)
- Harlem World 1982
- Cold Crush vs Fantastic
- Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 4 12/24/1978
- Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 Jackson Projects 1979
- The Universal Zulu Nation - Bronx River Center 1981 (This is a good tape because Bambaatta is cutting up Impeach The President. Accordingly, that's the only tape that uses the Impeach The President beat, which would be a Hip Hop staple in the late 80s)
- The L Brothers vs The Herculoids Bronx River Center 1978 (This tape is The L Brothers, Kool Here had a different sound system and his set wasn't recorded)
- Kool Herc with Wiz Kid & The Herculoids @ T Connection 1981 (This is a good tape because it's Kool Herc, the sound quality is pretty terrible though)
I know the sound quality is kinda busted on some of these tapes, but that's the point. Listen to it once and at least you can have an opinion when the topic comes up in a conversation. If somebody asks you what's your favorite tape, or your favorite old school MC you should be able to answer the question.
Likewise, there's a few other things that Hip Hoppers should have an opinion on;
Mid to late 80s radio shows - Mr Magic on 107.5 WBLS & Red Alert on 98.7 Kiss FM. Anybody who considers themselves more than just a casual listener should have an opinion on these radio shows.
