Can An Album Cover Make Or Break An Album?

No, not for me. Especially when I was buying physical albums. I would change the cover to what ever other pic they had in the booklet

Cease album was nice. Cover be damned.

Muhfuckas bought Yeezus, and that cover was shit.

There's a story behind this tho. The idea was to represent the death of physical CDs, as well as undermine what was commercially accepted & represent the rawness of the production (also why he wore the masks). The cover is supposed to be minimalist as a result.

Very cleverly it's also an ode to Ye being hailed as a "god", in that he's saying when he drops he's changing the game & bringing salvation. This also ties back to the change in production style. This album advanced the "grunge" or "alt rap" movement of the time. TDE, Logic, Big Sean, Pusha T, Odd Future, Lorde, Travis Scott production were largely influenced by Yeezus.

You been listening to Dissect huh?

Back in the past it could fuck you up cause niggas always judge a book by its cover whether consciously or subconsciously. But now you can just stream shit without actually purchasing so it no longer matters.

Maybe as an up and coming artist you can turn a few heads but ultimately some cover art not gonna make niggas check for you. Being at least decent on the mic, having some nice production, and getting traction virally the only shit that will do it.

Short answer, yes. Not so much in quality, but rather in the way we listen to the music. Images can add mood and emphasis to a story the sound is telling. More specifically, certain songs can stand out based on the art direction. For example, the Black Album cover fits perfectly with songs like PSA, What More Can I Say and December 4th which eluded to Jay "fading to black". If it was a cover of Jay sitting by a car, the music wouldn't have gelled the way it did and at least for me songs like Change Clothes and Encore would've stood out.
