This is a spinoff of the Any Mature Rappers Thread. I was actually thinking about making this thread before the Any Mature Rappers thread.
In theory, a person with a college degree is smarter than a person with a high school education. You'd think that a college educated person would have a broader range of topics to talk about, and a broader vocabulary.
But that doesn't seem to be the case. Out of the so-called Mt Rushmore of rappers, 2Pac, Biggie, Jay Z and Nas, none of them have college degrees. In fact, Nas dropped out of high school and he's considered to be the absolute best MC on ABW.
I know Chuck D (Public Enemy), GURU (Gang Starr) and J Cole have college degrees. They're all dope but I don't think their lyrics or subject matter is necessarily better than their contemporaries. I think the absence of a formal education makes you more creative and forces you to think outside the box. Great musicians in general don't have college degrees (Michael Jackson, Prince, etc.) I know Whitney Houston did have a college degree.
I was watching a Paul McCarteny interview on 60 Minutes on Sunday. Not only does he not have a college degree, he can't even read music! He said none of the Beatles could read music. They went on to say he's a billionaire! How does that work? People go to Berklee and Julliard to study music but they never become rock stars. And the rock stars that make it to the top don't have any formal training.
Apparently being able to read music has no effect on the ability to make hit songs.
And it seems like having a college degree has no correlation with writing rhymes.
Who else has a college degree?
Are rappers with college degrees better, or deeper?
Or are rappers that don't have college degrees better and deeper?
