Seems like some are stronger in certain places that others arent. Even being native english speakers does not mean we are articulate or masters of the english language. Lets help each other get better.

So today we have: So vs Therefore

What is the difference and when is it ok to use one but not the other?

Teachers feel free to add.

The word ‘so’ is used

1. in the sense of ‘as a result’

Ex: She is wise. So she is liked by others.

2.So can be used either by a speaker or hearer.

Speaker 1 : The last bus has gone.’

Speaker 2 : ‘So we will have to walk. ‘

Note: NOT ‘The last bus has gone, then we will have to walk’

3. It is interesting to note that the word ‘so’ is sometimes used in the sense of ‘very’ as in the sentence

Ex: ‘she is so good in her studies’.

On the other hand, the word ‘therefore’ is used

01, in the sense of ‘that is why’ or ‘as a consequence’ as in the sentences

Ex: She is rather mischievous. Therefore she was punished.

02. “therefore” is also an adverb meaning “as a logical consequence”. It is used mostly in argumentation when one statement logically follows from another,

The two lines have exactly one common point; therefore they are not parallel.

03. “Therefore” doesn’t sound natural when there is no apparent logical connection between the two statements; in this case, you should use “so”:

My trip to Delhi was cancelled, so I visited my native instead.
